The basis of the composition is, among other things, technology that converts recorded speech into rhythm and melody. Texts by Chairil Anwar, a poet from the movement for an independent Indonesia, form a starting point and a supporting element for this work. The audience can walk through the sound installation and, as such, immerse themselves in a personal listening position.Deflection is a robotic percussion ensemble by artist Paul Devens spread across the space of the Sint-Servaasbasiliek. You can hear: cymbals, parts of a drum kit, various gongs, vase drums, and a multi-channel speaker system with synthesized sounds. All of this is centrally controlled by a computer that sends pulses from a digital composition to each of the 36 pieces of percussion, and then sends sounds to six speakers.
