‘A bicycle shed is always in function of a coming or going: a passing that is cast in concrete. But these non-places have their own sound, their own voice. Due to the acoustics of these spaces, you are literally standing in a sound box in this piece. The outside world joins in: cyclists come and go and cars zoom past in the distance. A small symphony of passing sound lifted up by three voices and the space.’ – Mathijs Leeuwis

The bicycle shed: a place where you mainly leave and never really arrive. Composer Mathijs Leeuwis created Opus for a bicycle shed in collaboration with performers Theo Decloedt and Rianne Wilbers, a new work within the Tapeloop temples series – compositions that each explore a different part of the listening ritual. Opus for a bicycle shed is a piece for three voices: baritone, soprano and an electronic print on a tape loop, in which the singing and ambient sounds together form a new voice.
Mathijs Leeuwis (1985) is a composer with a deep-rooted fascination for analogue sound sources. He hears the greatest beauty in the transience of sound. Call it the authenticity of decay. And this is reflected in the instruments Mathijs chooses: tape recorders, feedback and concrete sounds. He is dogmatic in his curiosity: always looking for new sounds using old technology. Mathijs' work has been seen on the stages of Rewire, Roadburn and Vrije Geluiden, but he increasingly shifts his focus to the world outside the black box. He already did this as city composer of Tilburg, in which the unheard city was given a sound. But also as co-founder of Het Concreet: an experimental lab space for analogue sound development. The driving force behind all these different expressions is always the same question: what else is there?
