In this annual collaboration of Intro in Situ with Liège-based Ensemble Hopper, the ensemble presents work by Intro in Situ creators and HopperLAB!.

Ensemble Hopper is unanimously acclaimed for the cohesion, rigour and musical intelligence of its performances, as well as for the joy of playing together that it communicates.

Intro in Situ’s multi-talented, promising artists Reggy van Bakel and Ethan Blackburn combined their complementary artistic backgrounds to create the work Premonitions that challenges the conventions of the concert setting.

It explores how material exists before becoming realized; Ensemble Hopper alongside live manipulation play with each other and previews from field recordings and rehearsal materials of pieces in the concert to come. These moments of preparation, creation, and idea (and moments yet to be understood later by listeners) become in tandem compositions amongst themselves – not as a formal material, but some kind of bridge between the rehearsal (unmaterialized), its premonition, and its inevitable reoccurrence.

The HopperLAB! is an opportunity for young composers from the conservatoires of Maastricht, Liège, Bruxelles, Ghent and Mons to write a piece for the ensemble’s instrumentation of flute, clarinet, violin, viola, cello, guitar, percussion, and piano.

The composers work with the musicians of the ensemble during several days of workshops, followed by the different composition professors during a whole year. This year’s HopperLAB! participants are Laura Résimont, Ruben Detraux-Maurer, Matías Noreña Muriel, Eliot André and Adam Jasieniuk.

Made possible with support of: Federatie Wallonië-Brussel - Muziekdienst and Royal Conservatory Liège.
